The Discipline of Staying Invested
A new investment idea can make an existing holding feel less exciting. A weak quarter can make selling feel prudent. With prices moving every day, leaving a portfolio unchanged may feel like failure.
Yet when a business continues to develop as expected, an investor may gain more by giving it time than by making another trade. Patience is not inactivity. It is a capital-allocation decision.
Price signal or business signal?
The concerns facing Inditex in 2022 were real: closures in Russia and Ukraine, inflation, pressure on supply chains and inventory that was 27% above the previous year at the end of the first quarter. The share price reflected those concerns, and a decision to sell would have been understandable. But the more useful question is: what did the operating evidence available at the time actually say? It showed a business that kept growing.
A drawdown is information, not a conclusion. A study of more than 6,500 U.S. stocks over the period 1985–2024 shows a median maximum drawdown of approximately 85%, and more than half of the stocks never regained their previous high. The lesson is therefore not “buy the dip”. The task is to distinguish temporary weakness from permanent destruction of value.
That return is not proof that selling in 2022 would have been wrong; the outcome was unknowable at the time. The important observation is different: the share price changed dramatically. The economics of the business changed much less.
Conclusion
Patience needs to be earned continuously. It does not mean “hold for the long term”. It means continuously testing whether competitive advantage, incremental returns, balance sheet, capital allocation, earnings power and valuation still justify it. Sometimes that analysis leads to a trade. Sometimes it leads to a more difficult decision: do nothing.
